What is a Dopp Kit

What is a Dopp Kit

Traveling men are definitely familiar with the Dopp kit. A Dopp Kit is a convenient little bag used to store men’s grooming products. The kit was popularized by American soldiers who were all issued one during World War 2.

Today, Dopp Kits are also known as a Shaving Kit, Toiletry Kit, Toiletry Bag or Shaving Bag. It's a very important traveling companion that holds essential toiletries such as your razor, shaving cream, combs, deodorant, soap, moisturizer, nail clippers, cologne, tooth brush, toothpaste, floss, shampoo, scissors and combs. The list can go on and on since every man's needs are completely different when packing a Dopp Kit for travel.

What's with the name?

We've established the purpose of a Dopp Kit but you may still wonder, "What's with the name?". Well the short answer is the product gets it’s name from its inventor or should we say the company that created it.

The Dopp kit was named after Charles Doppelt, a leather craftsman, who moved to the U.S. from Germany in the 1900s. Although the actual work of creating the first Dopp Kit is said to have been Doppelt’s nephew and employee, Jerome Harris, the kit was given it's name “Dopp” short for Doppelt because Doppelt owned the company.

Numerous brands have gone on to create their own Dopp kit in unique styles and materials.
